Sebastian

The Beach House restaurant was bathed in flawless winter sunlight. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky as the silver Town car slowed to a halt in the car park. Sebastian glanced around to make sure he had everything. His heart was racing. Reaching over the gap between the two front seats, he paid and tipped the driver, instructing him not to wait. Sebastian had been assured that booking a taxi back to Whistler wouldn’t be a problem. He’d worry about that later. He was trying to remain normal and calm, but felt anything but.

Sebastian slipped his gloves on and slid out of the heat of the car. The cold surprised him. An icy wind came off the water, the frigid air making his breath seep out in smoky wafts. Sebastian fastened his coat almost all the way to his throat and knotted his scarf around on top and tucked it in. Wrapped up to the max, he didn’t look back as he strode briskly towards the restaurant. When he was just a few feet from the car and he sensed it steadily reversing out of the parking space directly behind him, Sebastian’s phone rang in his pocket. Recoiling, he stared at the display. It was Suzanne. He swore under his breath. He knew she’d worry if he didn’t answer, but he really couldn’t right now. He’d text her as soon as he could, he decided, which made him feel a little less guilty about his decision not to take her call. He’d never done that before. But today he felt he had no choice.

As he let his mobile ring out, he saw him. Sebastian’s blue eyes misted as he focused on the familiar man sitting at an outside table, wrapped in a dark heavy parka complete with a sizeable furry collar. There was a patio heater beside him and a pint of beer on the table in front of him. Even at some distance, Sebastian could see that he’d hardly changed at all. His hair was greyer and thinner, and was clipped short, but aside from that, little about his father’s appearance had altered. He still looked exactly like the big man Sebastian remembered. He recognised his son at a distance too, as almost immediately Donald Black raised his hand in greeting. Sebastian lifted a hand in return and then wiped away the wetness filling his eyes. He wasn’t crying; it was just the cold making his eyes run. Sebastian felt his stomach cramp, as head down against the bracing ocean breeze he made his way to the outside seating area to join the father he hadn’t seen for twenty years. All good intentions of replying to Suzanne at some point soon flew out of his head.

Donald Black stood to greet Sebastian and held out his hand. Right away, Sebastian noticed that he was now the taller man. He shook his father’s hand briefly but pulled away as soon as was polite. His emotions were in tatters whereas his father seemed perfectly at ease.
